Understanding Coverage Options on a Standard Massachusetts Auto Policy

As Massachusetts’ #1 auto and home insurer, MAPFRE Insurance takes pride in protecting what matters most to you so you can focus on the road ahead. With that in mind, we wanted to explain what the state of Massachusetts requires for car insurance coverage.

Massachusetts car insurance has four types of mandatory coverage for all private-passenger vehicles. When you purchase an auto policy with MAPFRE, you are protected by those legal minimum limits, and optional added coverage limits or add-ons can enhance your protection even further.

Required Auto Insurance Coverage in Massachusetts

The four types of mandatory, or compulsory, car insurance coverages in Massachusetts for all private-passenger vehicles include:

Bodily Injury to Others (Liability) Coverage: Bodily Injury to Others (Liability) coverage can help cover injuries and medical expenses (up to the limit identified on the car insurance policy) for anyone the driver harms in an at-fault accident. In Massachusetts, the most MAPFRE will pay under this coverage is $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident.

Damage to Someone Else‘s Property (Property Damage) Coverage: This coverage can help cover repairs for property the insured damages in an at-fault accident, including damage caused to another vehicle. The minimum level of Property Damage protection required in Massachusetts is $5,000 per accident.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Coverage: Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage is mandatory in Massachusetts typically covers medical expenses, funeral expenses, and lost wages as a result of an accident, regardless of fault. In Massachusetts it is required to carry PIP coverage.

Bodily Injury Caused by an Uninsured Auto (Uninsured Motorist) Coverage: Bodily Injury Caused by an Uninsured Auto (Uninsured Motorist) coverage sometimes shortened to UM, this helps cover injuries or medical expenses for the insured when the at-fault party does not have insurance or is unidentified, such as in a hit-and-run situation. The minimum level of uninsured motorist coverage you need is $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident in Massachusetts.

These are just the minimum levels of coverage required by the state of Massachusetts. Depending on your budget, you should consider paying a little more for a higher level of protection. It may cost a bit more, but it will offer you a much higher level of protection and peace of mind.

Optional coverages for Massachusetts drivers including Comprehensive coverage, Collision and Limited Collision coverage, Medical Payments, Underinsured coverage and Optional BI to Others can also be added to your MAPFRE policy. You have the option to completely customize your policy further with MAPFRE’s variety of value programs like Accident Forgiveness, Substitute Transportation and Towing and Labor.
